LANDMARK APPROVAL AT PORT
Transport minister Gillian Merron has approved the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company’s proposed £90m Seaforth River Terminal near Liverpool, which will almost double container capacity at the Port of Liverpool and allow it to handle much larger vessels, so called post-Panamax container ships.
“The most significant development for the Port of Liverpool since the construction of Royal Seaforth Dock in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s.
This will allow the large vessels currently only coming onto Southampton and Felixstowe to come through Liverpool making it cheaper, quicker and more efficient. Particularly from the Far East, the cost comparison based on a 40ft container of textiles delivered to Manchester from Hong Kong is £300 cheaper than shipping via Southampton.”
Tom Allison, Chief Executive of Peel Ports
